So what things are bad for my dilapidated body? Standing, lifting, spending long periods of time walking around, etc.
And what have I done? Back in 2007 during chemo, a friend told me I needed a hobby so I relearned how to knit and crochet. Voila, I became addicted and have a giant yarn stash. So I started selling my scarves and such at local craft shows.
I started in 2012 with one show, last year with 5 or so, this year I think I have 8. Or maybe its 9. In addition to knitting, I have started making hair pieces and clips reusing old clip on earrings. (I hope someone likes them besides me.)
What am I thinking? My back hurts this morning already before I am leaving. I will be standing on a hard floor all day, after bending, lifting, and carrying for a couple hours. I am sure I will be in 'perfect' condition by the end of the show.
And then I need to stop by the outlet mall and buy a pair of new sneakers. (Another non-friendly back activity).
Tomorrow, it will be a repeat. Except this show will be 15 minutes from home instead of 45 minutes.
Monday I will do a lot of sitting around and taking pain meds and icing my back.
All of this is self inflicted so you may feel free to call me crazy.
But craft shows allow me to have a creative outlet who's benefits have been researched and noted - knitting can be as beneficial as meditating - and raise a little cash to buy more yarn. And knit more.

Appointments can mess up everything!
We are going on vacation in a few weeks and looking forward to it. This is an annual trip that has been planned. (And no I am not giving special insight to burglars as we will have a house/cat sitter while we are gone.) As part of our getting organized for this trip, I have longstanding plans to have tea with the house/cat sitter to discuss details of what is the latest food the cat will eat as well as other general information.
We are supposed to have tea (or possibly champagne and paté) at 3pm.
Yesterday I gave up on my back issues and decided living on Tramadol is not the lifestyle I enjoy, and called my back pain doctor for an appointment. The only available appointment in the next month is at 245 on the same day. Wah!!!
So now I need to reschedule our tea/champagne and paté to later in the afternoon. Obviously I can't drink champagne and then go see the doctor.... I know I could have said no but it would mean more time living on tramadol.
This always happens. We are at the mercy of our doctor's and their schedules. I also know that we are also stuck with scheduling around our other appointments. But damn! I hate it when doctor appointments conflict with the fun parts of my life.

Living a better life
I have decided I need to take steps to improve my life (well our lives because this includes my husband). This has taken some thought to get here but I have come up with these:
This is part of living a better life. I need to do other things but I'll get to them. Getting together more often with friends. Going out more socially than I have been doing. Step by step we can live a better life.
- We need to eat better. I talk about it. I try to but not there yet. I can tell this because of my bulging waistline. My husband has a similar problem. More vegetables and grains. Less fats, etc. You know all of that but there is always room for improvement.
- We need to do more things together. Last weekend we on a day trip adventure to an ocean front state park in New Hampshire, just over an hour away. We walked on shady trails, sat on the rocks and watched the ocean roll in and admired the view of the offshore islands and closer lighthouses. Then we went for a late lunch, a little shopping and home. I have already planned our next trip in a few weeks. We need time at home this weekend to get some things done. Besides it would be less fun if we went on a day trip every weekend.
- I need to take better care of my appearance. I get regular hair cuts and get my nails done. But I dress like a slob I have decided. A casual top and dockers does not a fancy outfit make. I used to work in Boston in an office where wearing a suit was considered suitable. I stopped working in the city 7 1/2 years ago by choice and have gotten very casual. I actually went clothes shopping and bought some tops that push my boundaries of being a little dressier and even bought a dress(!). Today is the first day of new attire at work. We'll see how it goes. My husband does dress nicely every day in a button down shirt and sometimes even a tie so he is not a problem here.

And how was your weekend?
Sometimes I don't blog about breast cancer but just about life. This is one of those times. My husband and I are convinced that the planets are in retrograde or something or there is a cloud of doom over our heads.
Saturday we went to the beach with my sister, brother in law, brother, niece and nephew. We had a nice big cooler with wheels that my nephew and brother were dragging down the beach. It was packed to the brim with water bottles, cans of seltzer and ginger ale, cut up fruit, ice, and Italian ices in individual cups. At one point my brother picked up the cooler and carried it on his shoulder over the soft sand. He went to put it down and..... dropped it right in front of the life guard chair.
We scrambled and put everything back in. So now there was ample sand included all over everything. We enjoyed the beach, consumed much of the cooler contents, headed out to dinner and then home. The cooler went into the kitchen where I started cleaning the sand off everything. Then I found that one of the Italian ices, a blue one to be precise, had melted and leaked 3/4s of its contents all over the inside of the cooler. So now everything was covered with blue, sticky, sugary, sandy water.
I took everything out of the cooler and I went to dump the cooler in the driveway and spray it out with the hose next to the front door. My husband, unbeknownst to me, had started the sprinkler on the front lawn and I couldn't get outside without getting soaked. I turned around and headed to the bathtub.
And dropped the open cooler in the front hall with its blue, sticky, sugary, sandy water all soaked into the 100% wool carpet runner. It was sloshing around.
I grabbed towels and started cleaning. My husband came down and helped. The carpet and the sandy, sticky, sugary, blue inside cooler went out on the porch for the night. I put it on the top of the car in the sun and sprayed it with water yesterday so I hope it doesn't become an ant magnet with the blue sugary, sticky water. It is continues to dry in the basement. That was plenty to clean up and still more to do.
Then this morning...
I was sitting on the bed next to my husband drinking coffee, reading email, and dropped my coffee cup in my lap on the bed. My laptop was splashed. My lap was soaked. The sheets and bedding are off the bed and going in the wash. I hopped in the shower and removed the coffee from the lower half of my body. But I have a couple more loads of laundry to do today. And only enough detergent for one more load.
How was your weekend? I hope it did not leave a debris field like this resulting in lots of laundry.

Taking all the fun out.
Cancer has a way of taking all the fun out of life. They cut you up, they poison you, they burn you, and through all that they make you feel like crap. You are tired, trying not to throw up, weak, have the blahs, want to sleep and more. Then you finally start to feel better after treatment and want to return to a normal life.
Then they say don't drink because it can help increase your rate of recurrence. This is along with the advice of not to get fat because that can do the same thing...
It takes all the fun out of everything - don't get fat, don't drink, but you are fine. Big raspberry to that news!!!

A day off from blogging
I missed blogging yesterday. I meant to blog but time got away from me. My brother and his four children (ages 8, 11, 14, and 16) are visiting. This means chaos. The poor cat had to recover from over affection from children.
They are a lot of fun but some how take a lot of time. Breakfast seemed to last for a few hours as people wandered through and ate and left, came back for seconds, etc. Very different from the quiet mornings with just the two of us.
After my nephew learned how to make lasagna yesterday morning, my sister came over and the volume increased. Then all of us went for a walk in the woods on very icy trails. I thought I would be fine but I was exhausted.
Eventually they all left and went to Boston. I was physically exhausted. My RA feet hurt. My fibromyalgia body hurt. I needed a pain pill and a nap.My husband and I took naps. The cat continued his nap.
Then we went to my parents for a late Christmas dinner. I lasted about another 3 hours before I had to come home and become horizontal and sleep. I lead such an exciting life.
Today, my husband went to work (traitor) and left me home to deal with all the chaos. I have to take the remaining car to the garage for the day so I will be carless. This might even force me to take it easier than yesterday. But I will be at the mercy of family members to retrieve the car at the end of the day.
I can tell you I am physically exhausted still. Crap. This is no fun. But I do get to see everyone.

Its a holiday
We all need a holiday once in a while. A holiday is a day to enjoy. Its Christmas and for the religious, they may include services in their day. For the non religious, services will probably be omitted. But for all we should take a day to include friends and family and food. Some will head to the movie theaters. Some will head to a Chinese restaurant.
As an official US holiday, we should take the time to enjoy ourselves. The news just listed a bunch of restaurants which are open today. Anyone who has to work, should have been given it as an option and not a requirement to keep their job.
Shopping? Absolutely not. Its not a day to rush out and spend money on things we don't need. I grew up in Massachusetts where on Sundays as a child, nothing was open except the drug store and corner store for a few hours. You could not go shopping if you wanted to. So we didn't. We enjoyed ourselves with friends and family.
Today, take a moment to enjoy yourself with out spending a cent. And with out going to a mall. Take a fewminutes hours to enjoy what you have. Relax, don't think about work, and enjoy.
And appreciate your health.

I'm tired
We have been on vacation - an old friend (not old in the sense of aged, but in the sense I have known her more than 30 years). Now that we have vacationed, I am tired.
We haven't stayed up late drinking. In fact last night was the only night we have had anything alcoholic to drink. We really haven't stayed up late either. But we have had some (mis)adventures.
Day one: My friend left her purse and bag in a store. When she went back to get her purse, the cashier was chasing her out the store again about the bag she left behind.
Day two: We went into downtown Burlington VT and did some shopping. When we stopped for lunch I realized I lost the parking garage ticket. I had to plead my space shot story to the guy working in the garage. Then when we got back to the hotel, I realized I lost my hotel room key card as well.
Day three: After getting a new key card at the hotel, we went to Middlebury for the day. We did get several sets of directions and didn't ever find the last store we wanted. But I don't think we left anything behind....
Day four: We went to the Shelburne Museum and had a wonderful time (I highly recommend it if you are anywhere near Burlington VT). As we left the museum, I said 'we had a good day, we didn't lose anything'. My friend told me later she considered saying 'the day isn't over yet'.
My husband called me when we were back at the hotel after the museum was closed and we had the following conversation:
Him: What did you do today?
Me: We went ot the Shelburne Museum.
Did you buy anything there?
No, we decided not to.
What did you see there?
Some great exhibits on quilting, weaving, circus trains and more.
Can you tell me why your debit card is there?
No it isn't. I have it here.
Write down this phone number - its the number of the local TD bank. You left you card in the gift shop.
No I didn't I have it here. Wait, that's the other debit card. Damn.
Then my friend got on the home with my husband so they could talk about me. Apparently I looked tired and she thought we should have left half an hour before we did. I'm sneaky, I was actually exhausted about two hours after we arrived and we spent six hours there.... I slept really well last night.
I decided I wanted to turn the tv on so we could catch up on the news. I couldn't find the remote ANYWHERE. I went so far as to check the bags I had packed to make sure I hadn't put it in any by mistake. My friend then felt sorry for me and started to help. It was in the little stand right next to me on the bed side table the whole time.
Last evening I said to my friend 'we haven't gotten lost yet' and she reminded me that we aren't home yet. Crap.

Little bits of happiness in the medical worlds
The medical world does not need to be sterile and boring. Most waiting rooms have big screen tvs now. Chairs are comfier. They are trying to relax the patients a bit more.
I have been taking a family member for treatment to an area at the hospital where I haven't spent much time in a few years. I have noticed they are expanding the creature comforts for the patients and their family members. There is art. There is a lending library. There is saved seating. There is free coffee. Just nice little touches for long waits.
Then I saw this online:
A bunch of young men were seen running around a parking garage roof which is visible from the ICU rooms and oncology rooms of a Chicago hospital. I got a kick out of it. Apparently patients and providers a like did as well for its short life.
Engineering students made thousands of paper cranes for a hospital in Florida... The images are lovely and can be seen here.
While spending too much quality time at a medical facility, its nice for a little peek at something soothing or amusing.

My day in the arctic chill
This morning it is a tropical -4F. A lovely morning indeed. I do not need to go to work. I get to stay mostly at home. But I am going to get a crown at the dentist this morning. Which is better? Going to the dentist when its below zero or staying home under a warm pile of blankets. Of course, I have to go out. Damn. I do not do well in cold weather.
I did fall earlier this week on the ice. Today I will wear my really fancy clothes. I have a giant puffy down parka that is rated to 50 below. Then I will strap on my winter hiking boots which are rated to 35 below. When I am done getting my teeth drilled, I get to go pick up a free sewing machine for some new crafts. I hope it isn't heavy because it is being left out for me and there won't be anyone to help me with it.
Finally, I will go purchase an old collapsible sewing table for my new-to-me sewing machine. This table is apparently about 30 lbs. I will leave it in the car until my husband gets home. Then it will be heavy and really cold.
I posted on Facebook about feeling dizzy (and asked my mother not to read it but she did and commented on it) and the consensus is I should call my doctor about dizziness. I don't really want to but I will. This may mean another trip out into the arctic air again.
I really just want to stay home and play with my sewing machine. I have an idea for new crafts using a combination of fleece pieces and yarn to crochet the fleece together with the yarn to make infinity scarves. And I can make mittens from fleece and can embroider those with flowers and things to make people think of summer.
That's what I'll do today - think of summer.

Yes you may call me crazy
